A Rivet sculpture now? Yep. This is an art piece, as well as a model to study, when ever I draw him. It's always good to have an actual point of reference in front of you. I wasn't expecting to make this actually, but one afternoon, I sat down in front of my laptop, watching PotC2, and then I got some clay and set to work. I spent the entire day, from lunch to 11:30 at night working on it. I was "fired up", as they call it. Upon request from my cousin, I took pictures as I worked on it. And well, here's the end result.
I will honestly state right here and now, that I have never taken a formal sculpture (or art) class in my life. This was based on years on self teaching and just pure luck. So I'm still learning, and I'm pretty sure I'll improve later on someday. I'm still fired up, even after making this, I want to tackle making another project, time permitting.
The clay is sculpey II, terra cotta color. The "paint" is copper powder in resin, aged with a liver of sulfur (so that doesn't just *look* like tarnish, it's the real thing!),the wings are lightly brushed with SFX Pearl-X powders in a paint suspension fluid. Then varnished, and finally sanded to give a texture. The liver of sulfur isn't completely set, so there's a chance it will tarnish further(only to the paint layer), making it look nicely aged. Just like it was buried and thrown about by the sea.
Thanks! Nah it wasn't too hard, I did have problems with the clay cracking (since it's pretty cold in my area), but nothing a little portable heater couldn't fix.
OMG! This looks wonderful! I can't believe you've never gone to an official art school to learn how to make sculptures. This Rivet sculp is so beautiful and delicate the shape of his frame and legs were very nicely made, and the paint looks just fantastic. It's just like a piece of pretty jewelry. Love it!

Ah, it's Rivet-sculpture! And he's so epic! I'm blown away by how great he looks; he looks real, like an actual robotic scarab rather than a sculpture of a robotic scarab. The detail you used in both the sculpting and painting process is amazing, but totally worth it for the end project to turn out so well! He looks fantastic, girl!
