Siren of the Deep by SylentNyte Siren of the Deep by SylentNyte
This is no little mermaid, and she ain't here to save you. :XD:

I started this piece a month ago, but totally forgot to go back to it, until a few days back when I discovered it in my WIP folder. So I thought I'd finish it up, and post it. I think this took me around two hours max, give or take.

I'm happy she came out how I wanted. I love unusual mermaids, and I based her on a cross between a Lanternfish and an Anglerfish. She's got this grotesque/cute look about her. She's suited for deep sea fishing and the occasional human treat.

Oh my God, I love this! I do like the cross between the lanternfish and anglerfish. She turned out quite delightfully creepy indeed! <3

Thank you! :D I was thinking of revisiting this piece in my new art style as well.

Any time I see bioluminescent, deep sea fish merfolk, I'm reminded of Ripjaws. Of course since Ripjaws was one of the heroes I really liked, that's not a bad thing.

Regardless, she is an adorable monster and I applaud you for making her.

Hmm interesting. Never heard of that character, but he looks awesome. :D Thank you!

*whistle* You may say she's grotesquely cute, but I adore her~! Everything from her eyes to her hair and scales looks so great! The way she just stares out with those blank eyes, the motion of her hair in the water... There's almost a corpse-like feel to her, but maybe that's just me. If she ever chose to go human-fishing, she could just expose her upper half for a bit, let the sailors think she's a body adrift, and when they get close enough to haul her in, she reels them in instead! xD

And, my goodness, I love the colouring job on this! The glow of the bio-luminescence spots is so enchanting. It may be just a picture, but I'm totally getting sucked in~! xD Let's hope she only had a taste for male flesh... O_o

What we wouldn't give to meet a fantastic creature like this, eh? I bet she would have such stories from the deep.... Davey Jones' locker, Giant Squids, ancient ruins at the bottom of the ocean, or just plain treasure troves on sunken ships...

Sorry it's taken so long to comment, but rest assured that this is a terrific pic! The unusual side to life and fantasy is always the better side!

Aww thanks! Her blank eyes are exactly like those of deep sea fish, very soul-less but alluring. I definitely see her luring hapless fishermen to their doom with that trick.XD

The glowing was a bit tough to do.XD Glad you like that part. I'd love to meet to a creature of myth like this, so long as there's a good 5 inches of glass between me and it.XD

No problem, it's better to have a long wait and good review, rather than a short one with little to offer.

True, mermaids in modern myths are often said to be beautiful sea creatures, which I do draw as well. But in older myths, like the Russian mermaid myth has a much darker twist.

That's just what i was thinking when i was looking at her, blank white deep-sea eyes. They're freaky as hell on the fish, but on this unique little beauty here... There's just something about her stare that wants to draw you in.

Oh yes, you did a wonderful job on the glow and the background lighting. everything turned out so wonderfully!

5 inches of glass? Where's your sense of adventure? Get right up to the edge of the ocean and ask your questions! ;P If she were caught in some godforsaken tank somewhere, she'd be so miserable, and then we'd have to gang up together to break in and let her out! :XD: Sure, she might eat us, but it'd be worth it!

Hahaha, such a great philosophy! ;P

The older myths and fairy tales always do have a darker spin to them. Everything that little kids know today has been watered down and cartooned up by Disney. They're missing out on the part in Cinderella where the ugly sisters cut their toes and heels off to fit into the glass slipper and all that great stuff! Darker twists make everything better! :D
