Siren of the Deep by SylentNyte Siren of the Deep by SylentNyte
This is no little mermaid, and she ain't here to save you. :XD:

I started this piece a month ago, but totally forgot to go back to it, until a few days back when I discovered it in my WIP folder. So I thought I'd finish it up, and post it. I think this took me around two hours max, give or take.

I'm happy she came out how I wanted. I love unusual mermaids, and I based her on a cross between a Lanternfish and an Anglerfish. She's got this grotesque/cute look about her. She's suited for deep sea fishing and the occasional human treat.

Music inspiration- Davy Jones theme -POTC3

Oh my God, I love this! I do like the cross between the lanternfish and anglerfish. She turned out quite delightfully creepy indeed! <3

Any time I see bioluminescent, deep sea fish merfolk, I'm reminded of Ripjaws. Of course since Ripjaws was one of the heroes I really liked, that's not a bad thing.

Regardless, she is an adorable monster and I applaud you for making her.

*whistle* You may say she's grotesquely cute, but I adore her~! Everything from her eyes to her hair and scales looks so great! The way she just stares out with those blank eyes, the motion of her hair in the water... There's almost a corpse-like feel to her, but maybe that's just me. If she ever chose to go human-fishing, she could just expose her upper half for a bit, let the sailors think she's a body adrift, and when they get close enough to haul her in, she reels them in instead! xD

And, my goodness, I love the colouring job on this! The glow of the bio-luminescence spots is so enchanting. It may be just a picture, but I'm totally getting sucked in~! xD Let's hope she only had a taste for male flesh... O_o

What we wouldn't give to meet a fantastic creature like this, eh? I bet she would have such stories from the deep.... Davey Jones' locker, Giant Squids, ancient ruins at the bottom of the ocean, or just plain treasure troves on sunken ships...

Sorry it's taken so long to comment, but rest assured that this is a terrific pic! The unusual side to life and fantasy is always the better side!

Aww thanks! Her blank eyes are exactly like those of deep sea fish, very soul-less but alluring. I definitely see her luring hapless fishermen to their doom with that trick.XD

The glowing was a bit tough to do.XD Glad you like that part. I'd love to meet to a creature of myth like this, so long as there's a good 5 inches of glass between me and it.XD

No problem, it's better to have a long wait and good review, rather than a short one with little to offer.

True, mermaids in modern myths are often said to be beautiful sea creatures, which I do draw as well. But in older myths, like the Russian mermaid myth has a much darker twist.

That's just what i was thinking when i was looking at her, blank white deep-sea eyes. They're freaky as hell on the fish, but on this unique little beauty here... There's just something about her stare that wants to draw you in.

Oh yes, you did a wonderful job on the glow and the background lighting. everything turned out so wonderfully!

5 inches of glass? Where's your sense of adventure? Get right up to the edge of the ocean and ask your questions! ;P If she were caught in some godforsaken tank somewhere, she'd be so miserable, and then we'd have to gang up together to break in and let her out! :XD: Sure, she might eat us, but it'd be worth it!

Hahaha, such a great philosophy! ;P

The older myths and fairy tales always do have a darker spin to them. Everything that little kids know today has been watered down and cartooned up by Disney. They're missing out on the part in Cinderella where the ugly sisters cut their toes and heels off to fit into the glass slipper and all that great stuff! Darker twists make everything better! :D

Aww thanks.^^

Lol, the 5 inches of glass, I meant a glass bottom boat.XD Although, if we enticed her with some freshly caught fish, she might not eat us and gladly anwser our questions. Although with mermaids, you never know what they're thinking. Ugh, that would be sad. Creatures like her would be miserable in a little tank.

I remember my great aunt telling me the true story of Little Red Riding hood. That was quite gory, and it didn't end happily. I think that started my love of darker myths. Especially the Brother's Grimm. This little deep sea beauty was influenced by the Russian myth of the mermaid, or Rusalka, as they're called. They're typically evil, but beautiful water spirits.

Ahhhh, glass bottom boat. See, now that would a much better way to meet&greet Miss Fish. Who knows if we'd get a straight answer out of her, but there's no doubt she'll weave an interesting tale for us~

Those older stories were supposed to be gory to teach kids a lesson, the Brothers Grimm especially. Disney took 'em, softened them up so the lessons weren't so dire, and now look at society! O_o No respect, no control, no nothing... Disney is planning to kill us all.

The Rusalka sounds like a wonderful myth, though. Let's hope Disney never gets its hands on it.

No better way to meet a fish, I'd say. She'd say anything to entice us to lean a little closer to the edge of said boat. She may not know too much about humans, but she'd know enough about our interests in those strange sparkly rocks she collects.XDD

Makes glad my parents rented foreign films for me as a kid without knowing that they were more accurate to the book. I saw the live action version of The Little Mermaid, before seeing that hyped up, Disney version. The seawitch freakin scared me as a kid, while in the Anderson version, not so much. Weird that I draw half octopus girls now tho. XD

And have you seen their take on The Frog Prince? 0_o I don't recall the princess being so nice in the book. I mean, she threw the poor frog against a wall in the original story. Poor guy couldn't get a break.

*shiver* That would be so sad. Disney no doubt, will try to find fairy tales from other countries once it runs out of things to corrupt. Look what they did to Hercules and Pocahantas!

She'd say anything, for sure. But we're smarter than that, yes? If anything, we'd have to keep reeling in any guys we had on board. xD

Lucky ducky~ I didn't get to see the more accurate versions of the fables until I was older and had to go searching for them myself. I was such a traumatized victim of Disney. ;_;

Yes, I've seen previews for it in theaters. Poor prince couldn't catch a break, but at least getting thrown into a wall is better then another version out there where the Princess had to behead the frog before he could change back. O_o Although, that would make for a far more interesting movie...

Well, Disney raped Greece for Hercules, China for Mulan, and pretty much all of Europe for its fables. They're well on their way to digging their money-grubbing fingers into everything beautiful and sacred on this planet.

Those darn men and their appetites of pretty and dangerous women. It will always be their downfall.XD

After three repeat cryings, through three Disney movies, I think my parents caught on that I wasn't a fan. So that prompt them to get other things for me. Like The Last Unicorn.Which I adored. ^^

Haha yea! The first frog dissection ever mentioned in a fairy tale.XD Gotta love those quirky classics. Reminds me of the Cat Princess, and the guy who loved her had to behead her, but almost couldn't.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Next would be Japan's fables, I'm sure. The Crane Maiden most likely.

This is fantastic, I love the concept! The background is amazing too, the dark colors and all the things to look at really set the mood for the rest of the piece. The sunken ship is particularly nice. I tried an anglerfish mermaid too once, but it was nowhere near as good as yours =P
